Many royal fans might not understand it, and some members of the British royal family are even scratching their heads. However, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s decision to exit the British royal family as senior working royals has been one of the best things the couple has ever done for themselves.
After two years of trying to weather the storm that is the British public and press, the duke and duchess decided they had enough. They announced their exit from the royal fold, now called Megxit, and promptly moved their entire life from the U.K. to Vancouver Island in Canada.
Though the Sussexes are already garnering deals with JP Morgan and configuring their charity, what if it all doesn’t work out?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are even closer after Megxit
We could tell from their constant PDA — which is unusual for members of the British royal family, that the Sussexes adore one another. Now that they have chosen to put themselves and their son first, their bond has grown even stronger.
“They are besotted and very sweet with each other,” an insider explained to People. “Archie is the priority. It’s very much still about taking care of him and putting the family first. He’s a happy kid—he loves to laugh. Archie and Harry have such a good time together. And Meghan is a great mom. She’s very much about tending to him. They are trying to live their life as regular parents. They are real homebodies who love to chill out with Archie and the dogs.”
The British royal family is open to revisiting the terms of Megxit
When Queen Elizabeth II gave her blessing for the Sussexes to go off on their own as financially independent private citizens, she put a safety net in place for them. Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties. With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.”
This new arrangement is only temporary. “The new changes — which will take effect in Spring 2020 will last for a year, at which point the royal family will revisit the arrangement,” a source explained to People.
This is what will happen of Megxit doesn’t work out
Thus far, Markle and Prince Harry are taking things one day at a time when it comes to their break with the royal family. “Harry and Meghan have thrown the dice, gambling that the initial flurry of attention will fade, allowing them to forge a high-profile path through the commercial and philanthropic worlds while also controlling how much information is released about their most private moments,” Canadian royal expert Patricia Treble revealed.
If things do go left — the royals would accept them back in the fold but it would certainly be awkward and uncomfortable. “They are making contingency plans in case the Sussexes suddenly turn round and say: ‘Can we come back under your wing?’” ” an insider told The Sunday Times. “You could bring them back to Frogmore to look after them. They wouldn’t return to royal duties, but they could have a period of rehabilitation and recuperation.”
