People had very strong reactions to Google's 'Loretta' Super Bowl commercial - SFGate

In contrast to the rollicking game on the field, the commercials of Super Bowl LIV were pretty lackluster, except for one very touching — or very dystopian, depending on your outlook — ad from Google.

The spot, called "Loretta," is about an older man — it's implied his memory isn't what it used to be — whose wife has died. He uses Google Assistant to keep notes on things he wants to remember about her, from her favorite flower to things she used to say to him. It's interspersed with black-and-white photos; the commercial was inspired and narrated by the 85-year-old grandfather of a Google employee.

"At 85, to an audience of millions, he’ll be making his film debut," Google Chief Marketing Officer Lorraine Twohill wrote in a statement. "We couldn’t be happier for him."

Predictably, the tear-jerking spot elicited a strong reaction from viewers. Many admitted the brand made them weepy, while others pointed out the inherent creepiness of Google tracking and filing away information about the most intimate of human relationships.

"The saddest part of the Google commercial was the part where all of Loretta's data was sold to advertisers," The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya tweeted.

If you were of the dystopian persuasion, the commercial was made all the stranger by the bizarre hummus ad that immediately followed it.
