DETROIT - Garth Brooks proudly sported a Barry Sanders Detroit Lions jersey all night long while playing in front of the largest concert crowd in the history of Ford Field. At one point during his show on February 22, 2020, Brooks told the 70,000 fans why he decided to wear the old number 20.
“I’ll tell you why I’m wearing the jersey I am wearing tonight,” as the crowd starting chanting “Barry! Barry! Barry,” just as they did back in the old Silverdome days when Sanders ran wild while wearing the Honolulu blue and silver.
“I was lucky enough to be an athlete and to wear the same uniform as this guy wore in college. I was lucky to go to school with him. You guys got the greatest player in NFL history in my opinion in this jersey. I love this man.”
“And can I vouch for him first hand from way back when he just came out of Kansas and got to Oklahoma State? He’s also one of the greatest human beings that you’ll ever get to witness and be with. He’s a good cat. It’s an honor to wear this jersey tonight.”
Brooks played a more than two hour concert at the current home of the Detroit Lions. He performed around 30 songs as the 70,000 fans essentially were his backup singers. They seemed to know every word to every song, and he let them know it.
“We talk about how Detroit never really gets recognized for how well Detroit knows its country music. And it doesn’t matter the age of the listener, you know all the stuff.”
Brooks also told the crowd he was recording the final song at Ford Field for an upcoming live album. “All-American Kid" is the song he recorded on this night. Stay tuned for whenever this album comes out.
