Grey's Anatomy fans finally got to find out where fan-favourite Alex Karev had been, and why he won't be coming back to the show any time soon.
Viewers were very unhappy with his exit storyline, which saw him issue divorce papers to his current wife Jo and reunite with former wife Izzie to raise their children.
To be fair, we didn't love it either, but leading star Ellen Pompeo – who plays the title character Meredith Grey – has defended Alex's exit as "the best send off".

"Thank YOU!" she posted on Instagram, alongside a video montage of Alex's scenes. "You are truly the best, most passionate, most loyal fans anyone could ever ask for. Because of you we got to make great tv... because of you we got to make television history!
"Thanks to our national treasure @therealdebbieallen and the writers for giving Alex Karev the best send off [and] to @shondarhimes for creating the most amazing character.
"For me personally, for Karev to go back to the beginning was the best possible storyline. It pays homage to those incredible first years and the incredible cast that created a foundation so strong that the show is still standing. So let's not be sad."
Recently, fans were excited by Pompeo reuniting with a much-loved co-star from the ages, as Doctors Meredith Grey and George O'Malley (T. R. Knight) joined forces for a selfie 11 years in the making.
Grey's Anatomy airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. It airs on Sky Witness and NOW TV in the UK.
