Oregonians throw away about 4,800 cellphones every day. This is because our economy functions best when we make, use and toss at the greatest possible speed. Companies are using their power to make things harder to repair. This adds costs to consumers and increases the amount of waste going to landfills.
Next year, a bill will be introduced in the Legislature giving Oregonians the right to repair. The Right to Repair bill would give every consumer and every small business access to parts, tools and service information they need to repair products. This will help decrease the electronic waste generated by Oregonians. It will also decrease the digital divide between wealthy and poor Oregonians by increasing access to refurbished electronics.
As more and more Oregon families struggle financially, the Legislature must resist pressure from the electronics industry and make repairing electronics easier. Right to Repair is a common-sense law with countless benefits.
