An interesting running back option just hit the free-agent market.
The Cincinnati Bengals released running back Giovani Bernard on Wednesday. The Bengals tried to shop Bernard on the trade market but were unable to find any takers for his $3.7 million salary.
Bernard asked for his release, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

With Bernard now on the free-agent market, the Eagles could have interest in him as a rotational option in their backfield. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound tailback has produced more than 6,000 total yards and 33 total touchdowns during his seven-year career.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had a lot of success in Indianapolis with rotational running back Nyheim Hines. Bernard and Hines have similar body types and strengths.
Perhaps, Sirianni could look at Bernard as a veteran presence and pass-catching weapon out of the backfield. Bernard would be a logical complement in a backfield that already features Miles Sanders and Boston Scott.
Bernard worked under new running backs coach/assistant head coach Jemal Singleton over the past two seasons. That familiarity could help Singleton establish his approach with his new backfield.
While Bernard isn’t likely to garner a long-term commitment from any team, his ties to Singleton and his overall skill set should make him an appealing option for the Eagles on a one-year deal. From Bernard’s standpoint, his background with Singleton and Sirianni’s history with the similarly skilled Hines should appeal to him, especially as he looks to build his value back up this season.
At 29, Bernard should be looking to prolong his career as part of a running back committee. The Eagles would offer him the chance to rehabilitate his value and be part of an offense that could feature him regularly.
