When air fryers took people’s kitchens by storm a couple of years ago, I was admittedly intrigued. With all the delicious air fryer recipe options popping up on food blogs, I kept debating if I should buy one of my own, or if it would end up being another barely-used pricey gadget taking up precious kitchen space. Kind of like the Instant Pot I bought a few years back. But when I was presented with the opportunity to test (and keep) a Kyvol AF60 air fryer, it was an easy decision. Yummy food in the name of research, am I right?
The Kyvol AF60 works by cooking food with halogen light and air, heating foods up to 400 degrees. The heater produces intense heat in the form of lightwaves, penetrating your food while allowing you to monitor via the front window to achieve your desired level of browning or toasting. It’s also a healthy alternative to traditional frying methods, as it cuts down on oil, grease and messes, pooling excess oil at the bottom of the basket, beneath the crisper plate. This allows you to use less oil when cooking your food, cutting down on calories and fat.
The first thing I decided to try making was burgers. Prior to that, I’d used my George Foreman grill to cook them. While it got the job done, it often resulted in an overdone top and bottom layer, with a dry middle. The Kyvol air fryer provides a bit more space and allows you to keep an eye on what’s cooking before it’s done, all while pooling excess grease and oil at the bottom so you don’t end up with a greasy finished product.
Next up was steaks, which is one of my husband’s favorite dining out options. Unfortunately, I’ve struggled with cooking the perfect steak at home. It is hard getting steak to our desired level of “doneness” without setting off the smoke alarm. Popping a seasoned steak in the air fryer for 10-15 minutes does just that in a pinch.
Finally, most people might be surprised to learn that my favorite use of the air fryer has been to reheat leftovers — specifically, pizza and French fries. It’s all in the method of preparation when it comes to palatable leftover pizza, and almost anyone would agree that popping it in the microwave isn’t it. Heating up leftover slices for seven minutes in the air fryer gets pizza perfectly crispy and not at all greasy for a next-day lunch you’ll look forward to.
Similarly, French fries were admittedly one of the saddest casualties of the dine-in shutdowns that came about at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The air fryer has been a lifesaver in this regard — as soon as we get a sandwich and fries order delivered (or if we’ve brought it home from picking it up curbside), I popped the fries in the air fryer for five to 10 minutes. The result? Perfectly crisp and revived fries that are as good as fresh from the restaurant fryer basket, versus cold and limp from sitting in a car in transit.
So far the only drawback for me is that the air fryer can sometimes be difficult to scrub and clean if you end up with a lot of oil in the bottom of the basket. But the crisper plate is easy to scrub and is dishwasher-safe, to boot. So if you’re on the fence about whether you should splurge on this trendy gadget, my response is a resounding “yes.”
Right now, you can get this air fryer for $20 off on Amazon when you clip the on-page coupon.
