Humane, the hardware startup that’s best known for working on mysterious AI-powered devices in stealth mode, on Friday announced a new device called the Ai Pin.
As usual, the company hasn’t revealed much about the device, only stating that it’s “a new type of standalone device with a software platform that harnesses the power of AI to enable innovative personal computing experiences.”
Launching later this year, the wearable is clothing-based and uses a range of sensors to “enable contextual and ambient compute interactions.” Humane is also collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies to meet the device’s processing needs. The company says that the device will be powered by an advanced Snapdragon platform.
The last time Humane demonstrated the device was at the TED conference in April, where company co-founder Imran Chaudhri showed how it can project an interface on his hand, helping him take phone calls, display an automated summary of his day, and other stuff.
From what we can tell, the Pin will be a smartphone alternative, helping users perform a host of functions without having to stare at a screen to do so.
Unfortunately, at this time, that’s all Humane has shared about the device. The press release from Friday includes a single teaser image showing a device with colourful lights, but there’s very little that can be made out of it.
Equally intriguing is Humane’s name for the product. ‘Ai’ is an unusual way to spell ‘artificial intelligence’ and it’d be interesting to see how the folks at Humane pronounce the word at its launch.
