Star Wars: The 5 Best Villains Only In Legends Comics (& The 5 Worst) - CBR - Comic Book Resources

A long time ago in a Hollywood studio far far away, George Lucas developed the original Star Wars trilogy. The first three films were all masterpieces with amazing characters, fantastic action scenes, and some of the finest worldbuilding ever to appear on the big screen up to that point in time. On top of that, the series gave the world Darth Vader, arguably, the most iconic villain of all time.

After Return of the Jedi there was a long period with no new Star Wars content in theaters. However, the comics expanded the lore and created some fantastic tales with incredible villains, something they continued to do after the prequel trilogy was underway. Without using the main characters from the movies, these are the 5 best villains from the Legends comics and the 5 worst:

10 Best: Carnor Jax

Carnor Jax is an interesting character who was the main villain of the original Crimson Empire comic series. Jax was a man who advanced through the ranks of the Empire, after being picked to train on the planet Yinchorr to see if he had what it took to become a member of the Imperial Royal Guards. Though there were dozens of people in his training group, he was one of only a handful who survived, earning his place as a Royal Guard.

After the death of the Emperor, he demonstrated some aptitude with the Force and struck out to become a Sith Lord, but was eventually defeated by Kir Kanos, with whom he served in the Royal Guard.

9 Worst: Jodo Kast

After Boba Fett took a spill into the Sarlacc pit, another bounty hunter kept showing up impersonating Boba Fett while taking on contracts under Fett's name. He also profited from bounties by taking fees that only the legendary Fett could be expected to be worthy of receiving. As is probably obvious, this bounty hunter was the man named Jodo Kast.

Boba was approached about this by his long-time frenemy, fellow bounty hunter Dengar. Naturally, Boba Fett hunts Jodo Kast down and kills him. The story was compelling, but Kast was just a pale imitation of the original, both redundant and underwhelming.

8 Best: Darth Krayt

While the events of Star Wars take place a long time ago, Darth Krayt is a villain whose legacy stretches a bit further into the future of the stories. Interestingly, he was a Tatooine-born Jedi who fought alongside Anakin in the Clone Wars. He killed the Clone Troopers who betrayed him during Order 66, took up work as a bounty hunter, and eventually went to the Sith world of Korriban.

On Korriban, he adopted the Sith name Darth Krayt. More than a century after the fall of the Empire, Krayt set out to hunt down the descendant of Luke Skywalker, a pirate smuggler named Kade Skywalker rumored to be able to resurrect the dead. He founded the One Sith, terrorizing the galaxy with his immense power.

7 Worst: Tookarti

During the Clone Wars, the Jedi Quinlan Vos went undercover in the criminal underworld, working as a spy who gathered intelligence on the events going on throughout the galaxy, concealing his status as a Jedi, and claiming the lightsaber he wore was taken from a Jedi he'd killed.

The character Tookarti was a Chadra-Fan who worked as a member of Vos's intelligence network, trying to protect him when Aayla Secura appeared looking for him. He unleashed thugs on Secura, who effortlessly defeated them. Despite seeming loyal, Tookarti betrayed Vos to Count Dooku a short while later. Other than being a traitor, he's pretty boring and had an obnoxious style of speaking, which is why he makes this list.

6 Best: Sora Bulq

The Jedi Master Sora Bulq was once one of the most renown Jedi lightsaber combatants and Weapon Masters in the whole Jedi Order. Because of his skill with a lightsaber, Mace Windu asked Bulq to help him develop the Form VII lightsaber technique known as vaapad.

Unfortunately, vaapad required one to skirt the edge of the dark side of the Force. Bulq crossed over to the dark side, betraying Mace and his fellow Jedi at the start of the Clone Wars as he worked with the dark side operative Assaj Ventress and the Sith Lord Count Dooku to kill his former companions. His name became synonymous with treachery among the Jedi.

5 Worst: Black Sun

The Black Sun is a criminal organization with a chokehold on the black market economy across the galaxy. They first appeared in the novel and comic for Shadow of the Empire, where they were led by the Falleen Prince Xizor.

While the Black Sun is an impressive group in theory, time and again they are easily defeated no matter how impressive their forces are in a given situation. Several Force wielders have slain their leadership over the years and they got on the bad side of both Darth Vader and Mara Jade.

4 Best: Yuuzhon Vong

The Yuuzhon Vong is a group of aliens who invaded the Star Wars galaxy after crossing over from another neighboring galaxy in their generation ships. They were a fearsome warrior culture that strongly opposed the use of droids while relying on incredible biotechnology. They also existed outside the Force, making them immune to most Jedi powers.

The Vong have appeared in numerous novels, video games, and comics over the years. While they are sometimes depicted as scouts operating from the shadows or moving ahead of the main fleet, but they are at their best as they rage across the comics page, fighting in a furor of savage brutality.

3 Worst: Exar Kun

This may seem like a controversial choice to put in the "worst" category. In the lore of the Star Wars Expanded Universe (which Disney has relegated to the title of Legends), Exar Kun was the greatest lightsaber duelist of all time, a Jedi who fell to the dark side and became one of the most powerful Sith Lords to menace the Old Republic.

Unfortunately, his portrayal in the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi comics does not live up to this legacy. Like Anakin in the prequel films, Kun is a whiny entitled brat with incredible skills who lashes out at those around him.

2 Best: Clone Sidius

After being killed by Vader aboard the Death Star, Emperor Palpatine (AKA Darth Sidius) transferred his consciousness into a clone of himself in the Dark Empire comic.

As a clone, the Sith Lord proved so powerful his new bodies kept breaking down from the destructive nature of his dark side abilities. However, he proved just as perilous an adversary as a clone, if not more so, using the Force Storm ability to completely take down Luke, then converted Luke to the dark side (briefly), before going on to wipe out almost the entire remainder of the Rebel Alliance's forces.

1 Worst: the Ninth Assassin

To start with, it should be said that the comic Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin is a genuinely fantastic story with great art and an amazing story. It even fleshes out some of the origins of the prophecy surrounding Darth Vader/Anakin as the Chosen One.

The story concerns a plot to hire a deadly assassin - one who can kill Darth Vader after the previous eight assassination attempts failed. Unfortunately, this mysterious tough-as-phrik master assassin who hunts from the shadows proves less than his reputation would suggest, as is finally revealed in the not-quite-climactic final fight where Vader mocks the man before killing him.
