Your Morning Matters: ‘Just call out go go Gadget’ - Mahoning Matters

Good morning and welcome to your Morning Matters — with reporter Jess Hardin.

It’s Monday, Aug. 2, 2021, and last week I discovered Youngstown.

It all went down when a dear friend sent me a tweet from the account Midwest Modern depicting three angular-jawed young men with crunchy, spiked hair, skinny soul patches and dime-size hoop earrings. A blue sacred heart of Jesus-style flash of light emanates from the chest of the polo-clad central figure. Beneath their torsos, lowercase purplish letters spell out “youngstown” in a sans-serif font.

You guessed it — I’m talking about an album cover of the turn of the century hometown boy band Youngstown.

The trio is DC Yeager, James Dallas and Sammy Lopez, and they founded the band about 200 years after John Young founded the city. Their first single, “I’ll Be Your Everything,” was featured on the soundtrack of Disney’s 1999 “Inspector Gadget,” and it’s an undeniable bop. It cracked the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 71 in 1999. In 2001, the band released another tasty pop confection to moderate success — “Sugar” reached No. 21 on the U.S. Hot Singles sales chart. Perhaps most notably (to me, at least), Youngstown’s “Away With the Summer Days” appeared on the soundtrack of Disney’s 2001 “The Princess Diaries,” alongside early aughts pop royalty Hanson, Backstreet Boys and Aaron Carter.

In their heyday, Youngstown boasted a devoted following. The band toured with Jessica Simpson in 2001, according to a review of Youngstown’s Allentown, Pa., show in Morning Call, which noted the concert was attended by “150 or so hardy fans who waited two hours in steady rain and flashes of lightning.” One Amazon reviewer of the band’s first album, “Let’s Roll,” said, “Their [sic] not my everything … but close.”

Youngstown sadly disbanded in 2005 but will live forever in YouTube videos and my heart. If you’re looking for an internet rabbit hole, check out this visualization of the history of chart-topping boy bands from Musical Youth to BTS. You’re welcome for the Monday morning ear candy!

Let’s make today count.

Here's what you need to know about the Mahoning Valley today:

Ohio is back to crossing grim milestones of COVID-19 spread because of the highly contagious delta variant and the state’s sluggish vaccination rate. On Wednesday, the state reported more than 1,000 new confirmed COVID-19 cases for the first time in 11 weeks.

But since state leaders have started sounding the alarm about the delta variant, some unvaccinated Ohioans are heeding their warnings. Reporter Jess Hardin has the latest trends.
