Here’s why I can’t survive without it
According to Amazon, my Kindle was delivered on August 16, 2015. Since then I’ve also bought a PS4 Pro, a Nintendo Switch, a 4K television with Apple TV (and Apple Arcade), an iPad, a Surface, and of course, a couple of iPhones. But 1,691 days, and more than a hundred books later, the Kindle is still my go-to gadget. Especially right now, when it’s truly difficult to concentrate on anything.
For some, this lockdown has meant more time to spend on video games. Or to stream their favorite shows all day. Others have decided to take online courses. But as soon as I found myself with lots of time to engage in those pastimes I never seem to have time for, I was no longer interested in them. All I wanted to do is read my Kindle.
Just last week, I bought and read a few Kindle ebooks on pandemics and yesterday I bought a few more on a bunch of different topics. I haven’t read them yet, but it was oddly satisfying to do some shopping in the middle of a pandemic.
The Kindle brings me a certain relief during this uncertain time.
A Kindle makes more sense now than it ever did before. Because while I can’t go out, I still don’t have to limit my options to the books I already have and I don’t have to put any additional strain on delivery workers trying to get essential goods to people who need them. I can go to the e-book store.
The best things in life are cheap (if not free). And the Kindle is proof. I bought my base model for around $65. And while I’ve had the urge to upgrade it to a more expensive, or at least an “all-new” version, I’ve never found a good reason to do it.
The Kindle brings me a certain relief during this uncertain time. On days when I’m feeling too overwhelmed to start another book, I dig into some highlights from old books. I now have a new collection titled “Once More,” for books I can’t wait to read again.
After five years of using this device, it’s almost as good as new. At times, I’ve left it in the cupboard for months on end. But I always rediscover it, like an old book. Although it’s a different book each time.
As someone who loves his gadgets, I’ve rather openly daydreamed about some amazing new features — like an e-reader that folds, maybe?
But if I’m being honest, I doubt if I’d still let go of my perfect little gadget. The best thing about the Kindle is its simplicity.
All I need to do is give the battery a little recharge and the Kindle is good to go again. And unlike some of my other gadgets, I don’t have to worry about charging it as often. The battery easily lasts days.
Finally, amid all this uncertainty, it’s the familiarity of my 1,691-days old device that means the most to me. It’s comforting. I can’t say this about any other gadget in my life.
