Prince Harry and Meghan Markle escalate war with tabloids - Financial Times

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have written to the British tabloids promising never to work with them again, escalating an already ill-tempered war between the former royal couple and the media.

The couple, who moved abroad and ended official royal duties last month, sent the letter to four of the main British tabloids, The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Express and Daily Mirror, on Sunday evening.

The former royals said they were implementing “a new media relations policy” towards the four news outlets after the continued publication of what they believed were distorted and invasive stories.

“It is gravely concerning that an influential slice of the media, over many years, has sought to insulate themselves from taking accountability for what they say or print — even when they know it to be distorted, false, or invasive beyond reason,” the couple said.

“When power is enjoyed without responsibility, the trust we all place in this much-needed industry is degraded.”

The new arrangements will mean the tabloids will be barred from receiving updates and photographs from the couple. But the newspapers may also be blocked from attending the couple’s media events.

The couple said the approach was “not about avoiding criticism” but they would no longer “offer themselves up as currency for an economy of clickbait and distortion”.

“This policy is not about avoiding criticism. It’s not about shutting down public conversation or censoring accurate reporting. Media have every right to report on and indeed have an opinion on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, good or bad. But it can’t be based on a lie.”

It is the latest in a string of public statements made by the couple against the UK tabloids in recent years. Last year, Prince Harry compared the media coverage of Ms Markle to how the tabloids covered his mother: “I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”

The letter also comes amid a continuing court case involving Ms Markle and Associated Newspapers Limited, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, over the publication of a handwritten letter Ms Markle sent to her father.

The Mail on Sunday published several embarrassing stories on Ms Markle and her father, Thomas Markle, in the lead-up to the royal wedding, which included a front-page story on Mr Markle’s colluding with a paparazzi agency to stage photographs of his wedding preparation.

Ms Markle brought legal proceedings after the newspaper published a letter addressed to her father last year about his media interviews on the sensitive topic of their relationship.

She is suing the newspaper for breach of copyright, infringement of her privacy, and breaches of the Data Protection Act. Lawyers for the Mail on Sunday insist there is a “huge and legitimate” public interest in its publication.
