Letters: The latest gadget; individual decisions - Longmont Times-Call

Is the latest thing always the right thing?

I am kind of a technology geek. I studied electrical engineering in college, hold an Extra Class Amatuer Radio Operator License as well as a General Radio Telephone Operator License. (It used to be a First Class Radio Telephone Operator License, but that’s another story.) I am operationally familiar with several computer operating systems all the way from Vic 20 to Linux to Chrome OS to Windows 11. I have built several of my own radios, both transmitters and receivers. I know how an LED works. I have played with GPS, fiber optics, public address systems, served as an engineer at several radio stations, etc.

Just because we can invent it doesn’t mean we should use it for everything. I have a so-called “smart“ TV and some headphones that I used with my last, also “smart,” TV. The new TV has no provision for me to use the headphones without spending more money for some adapter so my new “smart” TV won’t be so dumb. The inclusion of which in the design would have increased the cost by about 37 cents including design costs and parts. I cobbled something together out of my junk box that works just fine and didn’t send the TV manufacturer a dime, or even 37 cents.

Is it really necessary to increase profitability by increasing the cost to the end user who probably already has something that will work, maybe even better, than the latest new fangled thing? In this case the system was for Bluetooth, but my headphones worked on a different Bluetooth arrangement than the new TV. The lack of a set of phono jacks connected to the audio board on the new TV caused me to think less of the manufacturer. There goes their profitability for any future purchases by me.

Let individuals decided for themselves

Stan Gelb is fighting straw men. Rather than the either/or question presented by Mr. Gelb (either the government pays for all sorts of programs or you just don’t care about people), Republicans know the best way to fix things is to let individuals decide for themselves how they can best use their dollars.

We know that people use their abundant ideas and earnings on problems far better than can a bigger and bigger government and its bigger and bigger bureaucracy.
