POURING the perfect pint of Guinness in your kitchen is the absolute dream - but will it ever be achievable?
I'm testing Guinness' new Nitrosurge gadget - a pocket-sized, USB device that its makers say will help you to pour a smooth pint every time.
The device is being sold exclusively in store and online at Tesco for £30, before being rolled out to more retailers later in the year.
While the cost may seem a little steep, punters are turning their back on their locals as the price of beer soars.
The price of a pint in a pub has risen in the last year - it now costs as much as £8 for a beer in some locations.
But as Guinness is my drink of choice, I've been unwilling to swap the taste of cold, fresh pint for a can of the black stuff at home.

So will I be willing to make the switch after trying out the Nitrosurge gadget? I put it to the test.
The test
The Guinness Nitrosurge device was incredibly easy to use - it was all done in a few minutes.
I opened my Guinness and attached the device to the top of the can.
I was a bit apprehensive that the device wouldn't be secure and would fall off when I started to pour, but it locked right into place.

There's a little button at the back of it that you have to press first, and the iconic Guinness harp lights up to tell you it's ready to use.
It works by activating an ultrasonic transducer - a device that converts energy - to create the surge needed to give Guinness its picture-perfect look.
To pour, you have to hold the can horizontally with the glass tilted at 45 degrees while slowly tilting the glass upright.
This was pretty easy and my experience working behind the bar as a student definitely came in handy.
It was then time for the two-part pour, which was the bit I was most excited about.
I stopped when the glass was two-thirds full and let it settle for one minute.
I then topped it up until the can was empty, but this time there is no need to press the button again.
The pint looked a bit “lively” as they say in the industry so I let it settle again for about 30 seconds.
The body of the pint looked perfect, but there were a few more bubbles in the head than I would have liked.
But after taking a sip I was convinced - it was like a pint that you'd get in the pub.
The cost
For the device to work, you will need to get your hands on the Nitrosurge compatible Guinness cans.
Packs of four are available at select Tesco stores across the UK for £7.
This is compared to £4.75 for a four-pack of regular cans of Guinness.
If you want to get your hands on the Nitrosurge cans, it might be worth calling your local store first to avoid a wasted trip.
You can find your local supermarket by using the store locator tool on Tesco's website.
The total cost for the cans and the device is £37 and while this may seem pricey, it could prove to be a worthwhile investment as the price of pub pints continue to climb.
The verdict
Overall, I was really impressed with the Guinness Nitrosurge gadget.
It poured really nicely and is small enough to store in a draw.
If you're a Guinness fan, I think it's definitely worth the investment.
But if you're someone that only has a pint every St Patrick's Day, then it probably isn't worthwhile.
