Gadget Daddy: 1 cable for all your devices - The Ledger

The PowerLine II 3-in-1 Cable Charger from Anker replaces three cables with one

Charging cables come in all shapes and sizes. They can multiply quickly: The smartphone takes a different plug in than the e-reader, which is different from the charging port on the camera. They seem like snowflakes: No two are alike.

And that's why the topic of today's column is the PowerLine II 3-in-1 Cable Charger from Anker. It replaces three cables with one. The 3-foot cable has a USB plug on one end. That plugs into the computer or an adapter for a wall socket. On the other end of the cable is a USB Type C connector. It is used to charge about 20 different brands of smartphones, including: Huawei, OnePlus, Samsung, LeEco, LG, Lenovo, Microsoft, Sony and Google. It's also the connection used to charge Kindles and other e-readers.

There are two adapters attached to the end of the cable as well, held in place by short "keeper" holders. These two adapters plug into the Type C connector. One of them is a Lightning charger that allows the cable to connect to Apple devices -- including iPhones all the way back to iPhone 5.

On the other keeper holder is a Micro USB adapter. It's used for charging GPS and Bluetooth devices, portable chargers and speakers, some e-readers, keyboards, cameras and camcorders.

Anker calls the cable "a cable for life" because the company guarantees it with a "hassle-free lifetime warranty." It has subjected test cables to being bent more than 12,000 times and claims it is12 times more durable than competing cables. The warranty, added a company spokesman, is "not for half a year, not for 18 months, but for an entire lifetime. It really will be the last cable you ever need to buy."

The cost, by the way, runs between $15 to $20, and the cable is available in black or white. It can be found at Target and similar big-box stores and Amazon.

One small thing, as well: There is a Velcro strap, about a half-inch wide, attached to the cord. It adheres to itself and can be used to hold the cable tightly wrapped so it doesn't tangle with other items in a bag or tote. It's handy; if it gets in the way, it's easily removed.

Anker makes all manner of connection cables, chargers, hubs and power strips. For more information, visit the company's website: www.anker.com.
