Former Home and Away star Tammin Sursok on the unlikely Amazon gadget she can ‘no longer sleep without’ - 7NEWS

Tammin Sursok has revealed her top three parenting buys from Amazon, and the parenting advice she swears by.

The Former Home and Away actress, who turns 40 this month, has partnered with Amazon to launch a nationwide competition for one lucky child to design the bedroom of their dreams.

The competition is based on the 2021 movie “Yes Day”, starring Jennifer Garner, and it encourages kids to use their imaginations and control their own space.

Tammin - who has spent a lot of time speaking to child psychologists for her podcasts - is passionate about the campaign because it gives kids agency and means parents can’t “say no” for a change.

“How many more nos than yeses do we say as parents?” Tammin tells 7Life.

“And yes, I know we have to. But I truly believe kids feel stifled and like they have no control over their own lives. Do I believe in boundaries? Absolutely. But I don’t believe in grounding and that any child is intrinsically bad.”

When it comes to how Tammin parents her two daughters, nine and four, she says she avoids punishment and instead seeks to teach them about consequences.

“If I say ‘you’ve been bad, go to your room’, that doesn’t work,” she says.

“But if my daughter spills ice cream on herself, then I tell her she has to wash her own clothes. Obviously, I help her with it. But I think it’s important for kids to learn that if they do something bad, there are repercussions.”

For example, if her kids break something, they have to do “chores around the house to earn money to go and replace it”.

“I think kids have to understand consequences,” she adds.

“My husband and I work a lot around solutions.”

When it comes to the tricky issue of mealtimes and getting her daughters to eat vegetables, Tammin says the easiest and most effective way is to serve raw and cut-up veggies “before dinner” as crudites - as this is when they’re really hungry.

“If I put meat, potatoes and veggies on the same plate for dinner, they will obviously go straight to the meat and veg because they’re hungry, but I find if I give the veggies first, they are more likely to snack on them,” she says.

“I also make a point of only offering one meal to my kids and if they don’t eat that, then they always have the choice of an apple and a slice of toast so they don’t go to bed hungry.”

Tammin adds: “I refuse to cook multiple meals, but I find if I give them a choice of three things like pasta before I cook, then they can feel like they’re involved in the decision”.

She also won’t put “dessert on a pedestal” and let her kids be rewarded with something sweet. Instead, Tammin prefers to put the sweet food on the same plate as the main meal, so one isn’t seen as good and one as bad.

And what of her top Amazon buys?

Top of Tammin’s list is something she can no longer sleep without: the Pursay Portable White Noise Machine ($67.99).

“We bought this for the girls not thinking too much of it, but you honestly don’t realise how much a sound machine will change your sleep until you have one,” she says.

Tammin also swears by the Rosetta Star Galaxy Projector ($146.03) for her girls, who have both struggled with being afraid of the dark.

“It has made bedtimes so much easier and it’s made bedtime fun for my little one,” she says.

Finally, and most recently, Tammin bought the Professional Volleyball Net ($83.40) for her whole family to play with:

We love it. Honestly, I buy everything from Amazon,” she says.

“I’m obsessed with Amazon’s home range because whatever crazy thing my girls ask for, I know I can jump onto Amazon.com.au and they’ll not only have it, they’ll have it delivered to me fast.”
