The Metal Gear Solid series is a renowned video game franchise known for, among other things, its groundbreaking stealth gameplay and innovative gadgets. Thanks to Hideo Kojima and his previous teams, Solid Snake, and other playable characters have access to a wide range of high-tech tools and equipment that help players to complete their missions and outsmart their enemies while having a ridiculous amount of fun.
From the iconic Solid Eye cybernetic implant to the versatile OctoCamo camouflage suit, Metal Gear Solid gadgets have become iconic in the gaming world. Fans have praised these gadgets for their realism and creativity, with many of them being inspired by real-world technologies.
10 Solid Eye
First Appearance: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Appearing similar to a plastic eye patch, the Solid Eye is a cybernetic implant that gives players enhanced vision and targeting capabilities by combining enhanced night vision and binocular functionality (though not at the same time). It can be used to see through walls, identify enemies, and track their movements by showing their footprints.
The Solid Eye is one of the most iconic gadgets in the Metal Gear Solid games and a similar concept also appeared in Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker - the Sonic Eye which allowed players to sense an enemy’s location and path through using sound waves.
9 OctoCamo
First Appearance: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
OctoCamo is a form of smart camouflage in a full-body suit that allows the wearer to blend in with their surroundings. It is made of a special material that can analyze any surface before mimicking the surface, replicating both the pattern and texture. OctoCamo also uses thermal technology, regulating the temperature of the user so that they can better blend in and not be discovered by thermal imaging as is the case with more ‘normal’ camouflage.
OctoCamo is extremely effective at concealing the wearer from enemies, making it an essential tool for any stealth operative.
8 Chaff Grenades
First Appearance: Metal Gear Solid
Within the Metal Gear Solid universe, Chaff Grenades are a type of grenade that releases a cloud of small aluminum strips and particles that disrupt enemy radar. This makes them very useful for stealth operations in particular, as they can be used to blind enemies and make it easier to sneak past them, perfect for any Metal Gear Solid player.
Chaff Grenades are available in multiple Metal Gear Solid games, but they are most notable for their appearance in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
7 Smoke Grenades
First Appearance: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Rather than focusing on the enemy’s radar, Smoke Grenades are a type of grenade that releases a cloud of smoke that obscures the enemy’s vision. This makes them very useful once the player has been discovered and needs to make their escape. By using a Smoke Grenade to create a distraction players can then attempt to escape from enemies while their vision is affected.
Smoke Grenades are available in multiple Metal Gear Solid games, first appearing in the canonical series in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
6 Cigarettes
First Appearance: Metal Gear
In the Metal Gear Solid games Cigarettes are a simple but effective way to distract enemies. When smoked, they produce a cloud of smoke that can obscure vision, though not as effectively as a Smoke grenade might! Cigarettes are also very common, making them easy for players to find and use frequently.
Cigarettes are available in multiple Metal Gear Solid games, but they are most notable for their appearance in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - Though it would still deplete the player’s health bar, Cigarettes help to steady the player’s aim when First Person View in this game.
5 Cardboard Box
First Appearance: Metal Gear
Possibly the most instantly recognizable ‘gadget’ from the Metal Gear Solid series is the humble Cardboard Box. It’s simply a cardboard box that Solid Snake and other characters can use to hide from enemies. It is a very effective way to remain undetected, as enemies will often ignore cardboard boxes altogether unless they see it shuffling along the floor with a pair of combat boots poking out of the bottom.
Similarly, players should be cautious of being in an enemy’s path under their cardboard box as if an enemy happens to bump into them they are likely to be discovered.
4 EZ Gun
First Appearance: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
The EZ Gun is a non-lethal pistol that fires tranquilizer darts. It is a very versatile weapon, as it can be used to take down enemies from a distance or to silence them from close range, whilst also being very quiet, making it ideal for stealth situations, many of which players will find themselves in the middle of.
The EZ Gun first appears in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and can be obtained by either capturing or killing all types of plants and animals in the game. A much quicker and easier way to get access to this gadget is to start the game on Very Easy, and it can be found in Naked Snake’s backpack straight away.
3 CQC Knife
First Appearance: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
The CQC (Close-Quarters Combat) Knife is a very versatile weapon and can be used for both lethal and non-lethal attacks. Commonly used by Naked Snake and The Boss in Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, the CQC Knife is perfect for when the enemy is deemed too close for firearm use. The CQC Knife is also very quiet, making it ideal for stealth operations.
Naked Snake keeps his CQC Knife in his left shoulder sheath for ease of access as he tends to wield a firearm in his right hand.
2 Solar Gun
First Appearance: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
The Solar Gun is a powerful gadget in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots that fires a concentrated ball of sunlight at its target, acting as a kind of stun gun which cannot kill but only incapacitate enemies. Fully charging the Solar Gun will increase its power, instantly knocking out enemies and sending them flying!
The Solar Gun is only available in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but it is undoubtedly one of the most powerful weapons in the series with many players finding it particularly effective against Vamp.
1 Infinity Bandana
First Appearance: Metal Gear
Unlike the normal bandana which is a part of various characters’ design, the Infinity Bandana within the Metal Gear Solid series is an unusual bit of kit in that it grants the player infinite ammunition whenever it appears in a game. One exception to this is in Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater where an important bandana is featured as part of the story (instead the Infinity Face Paint takes on the role of giving the player infinite ammunition).
The Infinity Bandana is usually unlocked by completing the game, sometimes with particular parameters such as not killing a single person in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
