Summary
- Black Widow's coolest gadget, a jetpack in the shape of her insignia, never appeared on-screen in the MCU.
- In the tie-in comic, Black Widow uses the jetpack to escape from a dangerous situation in Russia.
- The comic implies that there are potentially many more unused gadgets and weapons that Black Widow had access to during her time in the MCU.
Given that she was one of the two superheroes on the MCU’s Avengers with no superpowers, Black Widow had to rely on her near-superhuman skillset and her impressive SHIELD gadgets to keep up with the likes of gods and super-soldiers. However, as revealed in one MCU-canon tie-in comic, it seems Black Widow’s coolest gadget of all never even made it on-screen.
Natasha Romanoff proved herself an integral member of the Avengers even before the team suited up for the first time in the 2012 film. Debuting in Iron Man 2, Black Widow was set up as Nick Fury’s go-to field agent, as she was responsible for collecting information on Avengers candidates (like Iron Man and the Hulk) to ensure that they were actually equipped to join the team. Basically, Black Widow’s first job in the MCU was to spy on god-tier superheroes - so imagine how effective she is when undertaking a regular assignment.
While 2021’s Black Widow did give Natasha her own on-screen adventure, she was all alone without SHIELD resources during that time, which robbed fans of seeing Black Widow in action at her peak. Well, one three-issue miniseries remedied that by showing fans what Black Widow was doing between the events of Iron Man 2 and The Avengers (apart from spying on Avengers candidates, anyway), which not only gave MCU fans a deeper insight into her character, but also a look at some awesome gadgets they wouldn’t have otherwise known about.
Black Widow Got A Jetpack In MCU Tie-In Comic
In Marvel’s The Avengers: Black Widow Strikes #1 by Fred Van Lente, Neil Edwards, and Steve Kurth, Black Widow is on a mission in Russia to track down a dangerous arms dealer who’s moving software and parts for weapons of mass destruction.
In this first issue, Black Widow goes undercover in a nightclub to get information from a target while he’s under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. However, another spy kills the man before Natasha can get anything useful from him, so she is forced to leave the scene. Unfortunately, Black Widow gets made by local enforcers, meaning she can’t slip out the front door as she initially planned. Instead, her only means of escape is from the roof, which is exactly where SHIELD planted a jetpack for Black Widow in case of an emergency like this one.
Black Widow’s Tie-In Comic Implies There Are More MCU Gadgets Fans Never Saw
While the visual spectacle of Black Widow soaring through the air in a jetpack that’s actually the shape of her ‘Black Widow’ insignia (making it all the more awesome) is cool in and of itself, the fascinating part of this whole scene is how she came to get that jetpack to begin with. Before dropping her on location for this mission, SHIELD agents scouted the area and planted gadgets in places where Black Widow might need them. This means that, during this era of her life, there are potentially dozens more areas around the globe where Black Widow had incredible weapons and gadgets waiting for her that she simply never utilized in the MCU. This means movie fans weren’t just robbed of seeing Black Widow fly around in a jetpack in live-action, but were also robbed of watching her use any number of other sweet gear throughout her MCU career.
However, no matter how cool these other hypothetical gadgets that MCU fans never saw were, it’s doubtful that any of them matched the pure, unadulterated awesomeness of an on-brand Black Widow jetpack in action, which undoubtedly proves that the jetpack is Black Widow’s coolest MCU gadget - and it never even made it on-screen.
